Changing Gear in a Changing Field

A lot of controversy has recently erupted over the use and awarding of a photo taken with an iPhone using an application that adds an artistic tone automatically. Where has photojournalism gone, more importantly where does the future of photojournalism lie? If a photograph taken on an iPhone can allow a photojournalist to win third place in Pictures of the Year what is the difference between a photojournalist and a normal person carrying a photo ready smart phone? The photographer that landed the third place honor is a photojournalist, but one day a finalist just might be a lucky person who happened to be in the right place at the right time.
